Barely Hanging On

This is a picture of the ruins of the church at Sardis which is about 30 miles south of Thyatira in what is today the western part of Turkey. As explained in Revelation 3:1-6, the people of the church at Sardis were proud and looked good on the outside but not so good on the inside. They needed to reflect on their past, ask for forgiveness, and humbly follow the Lord.

There are many churches today that are very much like the one at Sardis. They talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. They seem to be barely hanging on, almost dead with very little good deeds. What is needed is a good self evaluation by asking the question: are we doing all that we can to keep ourselves spiritually growing and productive?

Sometimes we might think there is no hope but each day we wake up, we can still dream and believe because God’s love keeps flowing like a never ending stream. If we just hang in there and give it just a little extra, God can take it from there.

About Mark Shields

Mark volunteers as a member of the media ministry team at his church. A few years ago, he started an on-line Bible study guide called “This Day with God Devotional”. He uses this as a tool in his journey through the Bible. We live in a very busy world with busy schedules so this tool has helped him continue with daily Bible reading and study. Each of the studies are designed to help apply our faith in the work place, at school, or at home. Join him on this journey or check in every so often to read his thoughts.

  1. Amen. Amen. Great Post!
“What is needed is a good self evaluation by asking the question: are we doing all that we can to keep ourselves spiritually growing and productive?”

Did you know that people in the church find offense in being asked that question? Then they avoid you as though you said something wrong….LOL…. It’s gonna get better!

Many take things the wrong way when someone is trying to help in a loving way. I like your attitude that it will get better. Thanks for reading and your encouragement.

  2. This is an excellent post, my friend. I especially like the question you asked in your second paragraph. I think I should personalize it and keep it fresh in my mind. I do feel like I am just hanging on sometimes, but as you rightly pointed out, hanging on is not enough.

Thanks a lot for sharing, Mark. May God continue to inspire and bless you.
